How To Add a Bathroom to Your Home

Adding a bathroom is a really popular home remodeling project. New plumbing installation adds value to your home. Aside from the added convenience, you will typically recover over 60% of the investment if you sell your home.

How Much Does an Additional Bathroom Cost?

A new bathroom installation can cost as little as a few thousand dollars to more than $50,000 and up depending on exactly what you want to get out of it. Because of this it will be important to set a budget early on and stick with it, or the expenses could get out of control.

Where Can a Bathroom Be Added to a Home?

With an unlimited budget, a bathroom can be added anywhere in a home or even be part of a new addition to the home itself. However, there are a few places where it is a bit more convenient and less expensive to add a bathroom. Those areas are: a closet, a hallway, a bedroom, the garage or under a staircase. You might also want to consider extending your existing bathroom as an option.

Types of Bathrooms

Four components make up a bathroom: toilet, sink, shower and tub. A full bath contains all of these elements while a three quarter bath has three of the four and a half bath has only two of the elements.

Full Bathrooms

If a home only has one bathroom, it is almost always a full bathroom. A full bathroom is also most common as the primary bathroom (which is the one attached to the largest bedroom). If you want to add a full bathroom to your home the most common places to add one are inside the bedroom or by repurposing a walk in closet.

Three-Quarter Bathrooms

A three-quarter bathroom has three elements, a toilet, a sink and in most cases a shower. These are very common rooms as many bathrooms are being designed without a tub. This can be a good option for someone who wants a full bath but is lacking the room.

Half-Bathrooms

If you are hoping to repurpose a smaller space such as a closet or area under a stairway, this is a good choice. Here there are only two elements, usually a toilet and a sink. This can really add convenience to your home.

Quarter-Bathrooms

These are usually called a toilet stall or a shower stall. These types of bathrooms simply contain one element, either a toilet or shower.

Plumbing Installation

There may be some aspects of adding a bathroom to your home that you can do yourself, however, plumbing installation is not one of them. You will need to hire a professional plumber to install the plumbing for your new bathroom.

If you want to install special features such as a clawfoot tub, hot tub or a bidet you will definitely need to call a professional for plumbing installation.

If you have not had plumbing in your basement or garage before, again, this will be a job left best to a plumbing installation professional.

Other Considerations

While adding a bathroom to your home might sound simple enough, there is more to it than meets the eye. You will need to consider any zoning or HOA rules which might affect your project’s viability.

It is also important to make sure that you have enough space and proper ventilation for your bathroom. While bathrooms can be fit into smaller areas, there is still a need for some space. Also note that in many places there are housing codes which lay out the rules for such things.
